Trichogin 500 mg Tablets contain tinidazole, an oral antimicrobial medicine used against certain susceptible protozoal and anaerobic bacterial infections. It is supplied as a pack of 20 immediate-release tablets and should be used only as directed by a healthcare professional.

Usage & Safety

For Adult

• Dosage depends on the infection and clinical response; follow the prescribed regimen.
• Common regimens may include a single 2 g dose for trichomoniasis or giardiasis, taken with food.
• For intestinal amebiasis, a common regimen is 2 g once daily for 3 days; amebic liver abscess may require 2 g once daily for 3–5 days.
• For bacterial vaginosis, regimens may include 2 g once daily for 2 days or 1 g once daily for 5 days.
• For anaerobic infections, treatment may begin with 2 g on the first day followed by 1 g daily, or 500 mg twice daily, for the duration prescribed.
• Take with food if stomach upset occurs, and complete the prescribed course.

For Children

• Use in children only on medical advice.
• For giardiasis or amebiasis, commonly used pediatric dosing is approximately 50 mg/kg once daily, subject to a maximum of 2 g per day and the prescribed treatment duration.
• Safety and dosing for trichomoniasis and bacterial vaginosis in children and adolescents should be determined by a specialist.
• Do not give this product to infants or children without healthcare-professional guidance.

Side Effects

• Common: nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, tiredness, and unpleasant or metallic taste
• May cause temporary darkening of urine
• Less common: oral or vaginal fungal overgrowth, skin rash, itching, or hypersensitivity
• Serious: severe allergic reaction, blistering or peeling skin, seizures, confusion, severe dizziness, or peripheral neuropathy with numbness, burning, or tingling
• Prolonged or repeated treatment may rarely affect blood-cell counts or liver function

Contraindications

• Allergy to tinidazole, metronidazole, other nitroimidazole medicines, or any tablet ingredient
• Use during the first trimester of pregnancy unless specifically directed by a specialist
• Breastfeeding during treatment and for 72 hours after the final dose unless an appropriate medical plan has been provided
• Use of disulfiram within the previous 2 weeks may cause mental-status reactions
• Use cautiously in patients with significant liver disease, blood disorders, neurological disease, or a history of seizures
• Stop and seek medical attention for severe rash, numbness or tingling, seizures, confusion, or coordination problems

Precautions & Warnings

• Avoid alcohol and products containing alcohol during treatment and for 72 hours after the last dose because severe nausea, vomiting, flushing, headache, or rapid heartbeat may occur.
• May increase the effect of warfarin and other oral anticoagulants; monitoring and dose adjustment may be required.
• Use caution with lithium because toxicity may occur.
• Phenytoin and phenobarbital may reduce tinidazole levels, while tinidazole may affect phenytoin levels.
• May increase exposure or toxicity of ciclosporin, tacrolimus, or fluorouracil.
• Tell the clinician about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, and supplements before use.

Pregnancy

• Discuss use with a healthcare professional during pregnancy; avoid self-medication.
• Use is generally avoided during the first trimester unless the expected benefit clearly outweighs the risk.
• For later pregnancy, treatment should be used only when specifically prescribed after an individual risk–benefit assessment.
• Do not breastfeed during treatment and for 72 hours after a single-dose or final treatment dose unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.
